Call your podiatrist today. When you begin to experience pain or discomfort, your body is warning you of a problem. Ignoring the first sign of a problem with your feet or ankles is not the wise choice. A podiatrist will be able to diagnose your pain and help you treat your foot or ankle condition before it gets worse. Many foot conditions worsen over time and without proper care and treatment can become serious—especially if you have diabetes.

Common Foot Problems

When you begin to have trouble walking or standing due to pain in your feet or you suddenly experience pain or swelling, it is a sign that you need to call your podiatrist. There are common problems that can be dealt with by your podiatrist so you can be back on your feet and pain-free in little time.

If you have any of the following problems, it may be time to call a podiatrist:

  • Athlete’s foot. Often athlete’s foot can be treated with over-the-counter medication. If it is reoccurring, however, a trip to the podiatrist is a must. They will be able to prescribe a prescription-strength medication to treat your condition and keep it from coming back.
  • Toenail fungus. A fungal infection can cause your toenails to become thick and discolored and often can spread from one toe to another. A podiatrist can help treat the fungus and get your toenails back to normal.
  • Heel pain. There are many issues that result in pain in the heel such as plantar fasciitis. Your podiatrist will evaluate your pain and run diagnostic tests to find the source of your heel pain and recommend the proper treatment.
  • Numbness. If you begin to experience numbness in your feet or toes, it can be a sign of a serious problem. Consult with your podiatrist who will be able to diagnose the cause of the numbness and determine what treatment you may need.
  • Broken/sprained foot or ankle. If you think you have broken or sprained your foot or ankle, a podiatrist can evaluate and help treat your injury.
  • Bunions. As a bunion gets larger, it can become painful. A podiatrist can determine the best treatment for your bunion based on the severity of the condition.
  • Corns and calluses. Both of these problems can be painful and can worsen over time. A podiatrist can recommend treatment and prescribe a topical medication to help treat the condition.
  • Unexplained pain or swelling. Any pain or swelling that comes on suddenly should be evaluated by a podiatrist. Pain and swelling can be the result of various foot and ankle conditions.
